Se dio a conocer como miembro de la banda Excuse 17 antes de formar el trío punk indie Sleater-Kinney. Durante un largo paréntesis de Sleater-Kinney formó el grupo Wild Flag. Durante este período, Brownstein escribió y apareció en una serie de sketches cómicos con Fred Armisen que luego se desarrollaron en los Emmy y Peabody Award, ganadora de satírica serie de comedia de televisión Portlandia.
